Music
At Healdswood Infant and Nursery School, we love music! Music provides the children with a variety of transferable skills, such as listening, thinking in patterns and being creative and can improve the confidence of all children. We want to give all children opportunities to participate in a variety of enjoyable musical activities, in which they are able to participate as performers, listeners and composers. It is our vision for children to have, not only the skills for music, but also the passion and curiosity to continue this after they leave our school. We encourage children to use music as a form of expression and support them in making links between other areas of the curriculum at school and in the wider community. Music provides a universal language which everyone can enjoy, participate and learn. Pupil’s cultural capital is significantly enhanced as a consequence of all the above; paving the way for pupils to become well rounded individuals ready to lead their best lives.
Music is taught at Healdswood Infant & Nursery School as an area of learning in its own right as well as integrated where possible with other curriculum subjects. In KS1, children have 1 hour of music provision per week. This consists of a 45 minute direct teach session alongside a 15 minute singing assembly. KS1 children have access to tuned and untuned instruments including boom whackers (Y1) and glockenspiels (Y2). We teach music through different styles, genres and cultures. EYFS children have 20 min direct teach sessions alongside ample opportunities within the continuous provision to explore and make music.
We teach music in line with the National Curriculum and adapt accordingly for our children. The strands of music we teach and embed include:
- Listening and Appraising
- Composing
- Performing (singing and instrumental)
- Interrelated dimensions of music (musical elements)
Our children have access to a weekly music club should they wish to further master and consolidate musical skills and, of course, to have fun making music!
