Protected Characteristics
What are Protected Characteristics?
The Equality Act 2010 means it is illegal to discriminate against someone because of the following, which are called protected characteristics.

-
age
-
disability
-
gender reassignment
-
being married or in a civil partnership
-
pregnancy and maternity
-
race
-
religion or belief
-
sex
-
sexual orientation
At Healdswood, we pride ourselves on having a well-considered approach to the teaching of the protected characteristics, in order to:
-
eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation
-
develop good relations between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it
Stories used to promote the Protected Characteristics
These books have been chosen to provide the children with examples of the protected characteristics, working to increase their understanding surrounding these. They are read as class texts throughout the year and the stories encourage positive and guided discussions of the protected characteristics. Whilst increasing the children’s understanding, pupils are also given the opportunity to share their opinions and ask questions in a safe environment.
