Key Stage 1

The Key Stage One (KS1) Curriculum is taught to children in Year 1 and Year 2, aged between 5 and 7. It is designed to introduce the core subjects to the children that they will learn throughout their educational journey:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Design and Technology
  • History
  • Geography
  • Art and Design
  • Music
  • Physical Education (PE)
  • Computing

We also provide:

  • Relationships and Health Education – many elements of this are taught through our PSHE lessons. However, it also runs through other subjects such as Science, British Values and Protected Characteristics and PE.
  • Religious Education (RE)
  • Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)

The Curriculum at Healdswood Infant and Nursery School has been rigorously developed to allow for concept progression and links. For example, in Years 1 and 2, pupils will be taught either a History or Geography focus through an overarching enquiry question.

Our curriculum allows our children to engage, immerse and wonder – allowing them to be inquisitive and curious which encourages our pupils to become critical thinkers. We also make explicit links through our Science, Music and Art Curriculum, where children will discover the amazing achievements of many different individuals, which promotes the children's knowledge and understanding of diversity in the world we live in.

Reading is at the heart of the curriculum in KS1 and through our reading spines, quality topic-based texts and Talk for Writing approach we foster a love of books and a rich vocabulary.

We strongly believe that children remember their learning over time by experiencing and doing and so in Year 1 we incorporate continuous provision into the curriculum timetable, building on the skills and knowledge that the children aquire through their lessons. Our aim is to develop confident learners who will take risks in a supportive and nurturing environment.

In year 2, we also offer every child the opportunity to go swimming. It is important to us that all children access swimming lessons by the age of 7, which supports the development of a very important life skill.
