Geography

At Healdswood Infant and Nursery School, our ambitious is to provide the children with a geography curriculum which will inspire curiosity and fascination about the world around them Our geography curriculum is sequenced coherently so that knowledge is developed through two distinct strands: Locational Geography and Human and Physical Geography. As pupils progress, they will link prior knowledge in geographical schemas and pupils knowledge of the world will contribute to their conceptual understanding of place, space and the environment. Pupils will also explore concepts woven through those strands, such as: sustainability and change, encouraging our pupils to appreciate their local environment, community and the wider world.

At Healdswood Infant and Nursery School, our geography curriculum includes explicitly taught knowledge with independent application of that knowledge.  In KS1, pupils begin use maps and recognise physical and human features in their locality, before using maps to explore the United Kingdom and the continents and oceans of the world in Year 2. Further, in year 2, pupils to compare where they live to places in Non-European country to develop their global understanding.  Fieldwork is integral to becoming a Geographer at Healdswood Infant School and we provide authentic experiences for fieldwork in the local environment and community to develop geographical knowledge. At the end of a learning sequence, pupils are provided opportunity to demonstrate their learning through the use of retrieval quizzes. At Healdswood, vocabulary is taught in the given context throughout the geography curriculum to enhance pupils oracy and language development.

At Healdswood Infant and Nursery School, our ambition is for all of our pupils to access the full geography curriculum. These children are supported in lessons to provide them with full accessibility to the knowledge-rich geography curriculum.
