Maple - Year 1

Welcome to Maple Class!

Maple Class is taught by Miss Stretton-Clarke.

Mrs Walker, Mrs Wilson and Mrs Elliott work with us and support our learning.

We have lots of fun in Year 1 and always try our best!

A few reminders...

  • Our PE day is a Thursday. Please ensure that all children have a suitable PE kit with them each week. We advise that children bring their PE kits into school at the beginning of term and leave it on their pegs for the whole term.
  • Children need their book bags in school EVERY DAY.  We read with your children several times throughout the week and it is very important that this is recorded in their reading diaries.
  • Maple's Forest School day is every other Wednesday afternoon. We are alternating weeks with the other Year 1 class. Please make sure that children have suitable clothing and footwear to change into for the session as we will be going out in all weather.
  • It is important that children are reading at home as well as in school. When you listen to your child read at home, please write in their diary so that we know their book needs changing.  Please try to read with your child at least 3 times a week.
  • Spellings will be set each week, will be tested every Friday and then a new set will be given. Please practice the spellings with your child. They will be given a 'Look, Cover, Write, Check' sheet with their new spellings on, but feel free to practice in different ways. Make it as fun as you can! Write them using chalks on the floor, practice in paints or felt tips, you could even practice on frosted windows! Practice makes perfect.

This means during the run up to this date staff will be putting boosters in place in order to increase children's confidence with phonics. Below are some links to websites that can help you practice with your children.

Our Learning 2018-2019

Year 1's Trip to Brierley Forest Park

Year 1 had a fantastic time on their trip to Brierley Forest Park. We participated in a Green Flag Ceremony celebrating the beautiful green spaces at Brierley Forest Park and Sutton Lawns. We identified different woodland creatures and spoke about their habitats and where they would live in a woodland. After lunch, we loved going on a mini beast hunt. We used nets and mats to collect different insects and looked closely using magnifying glasses. We especially loved pond dipping. We caught small fish, snails, pond weeds and different creatures that live in ponds. Mrs Wilson even caught a frog! We named him Wilson. Here are some photo's from our exciting adventure.

 Spring 2 - Moon Zoom

Our topic this half term is 'Moon Zoom'. We will be learning about space, our solar system and historical events such as moon landings and Tim Peake's mission into space.

National Space Centre - 4/3/19

The children and staff had a great time on our trip to the National Space Centre. We went up the Rocket Tower, experienced a launch pad and control room and learnt a lot from the different exhibitions, such as The Universe and Our Solar System. We also watched a planetarium show about Astronauts, how they train and the conditions they have to survive and work in during their time in space. What an amazing day!

Forest School - 31.1.19

We had a fun but chilly time out in forest school today. Our new mud kitchen was delivered today and we were lucky enough to be the first class to have a play! We loved it and had so much fun!

Spring 1 - Superhereos!

This half-term we will be looking at Superheroes. Year 1 will be looking at both fictional superheroes and real people that have helped changed the world. Within this topic we will also be looking at the art work that surrounds superheroes; Pop Art and visual effects.

Autumn 2 - Celebrations!
We will be looking at a range of different celebrations from different religions or parts of history. Year 1 will be looking at Bonfire Night and why we celebrate it, Diwali and how that is celebrated around the world and will also be looking at the Christmas Story.

Christingle Making

This afternoon we have made Christingles ready for our Christingle Service Assembly on Monday 3rd December. We discussed the meaning of a Christingle and what each part represents. We look forward to lighting them during our service.

Instruction Writing - Sandwich Making

This week, Year 1 have been looking at Instructions.  We have looked at a variety of different instruction texts, identified their key features and collected a bank of 'bossy' imperative verbs ready to write our own set of instructions. On Thursday, we made jam sandwiches all by ourselves! We thought about the different steps needed to make our sandwich. We are now going to write our own set of instructions all about how to make a jam sandwich.

Fire Safety - Visit from the Firefighters and Fire Engine.

We were lucky enough to have a visit from the Ashfield Fire Rescue Team in school today. We spoke about sparklers, fireworks and bonfires and how to keep ourselves safe when going to Firework Displays. We were even allowed to go and see the fire engine! We looked at the engine, spoke about the different parts and equipment that the firefighters use when fighting fires and out completing rescues. We really enjoyed sitting in the fire engine, watching the lights and listening to the loud sirens! Miss Stretton-Clarke, Mr Ward and Mrs Walker were allowed to sit in the front!

Punch and Judy Puppet Making

We had a Design & Technology Day on Thursday 11th October. As part of our topic this term, we have been thinking about holidays in present day and holidays that Victorian people would have had in the past. We have thought about similarities and differences and have looked at the activities Victorian adults and children would have taken part in during their seaside holidays. We discussed the Punch and Judy show and looked at the basic story line. As part of our DT day, Year 1: designed, made, performed and evaluated using their own hand made puppets. We used wooden spoons for our puppets,  included a range of different materials and had a go at using lots of design and fixing skills to create our puppets. We had a lovely time and worked really hard. They look amazing!

Grandparent's Day

Thank you to all the Grandparents that came to our Grandparent's Day Afternoon. We had a lovely time sketching portraits of each other. We ended our afternoon with a sing along! The children had a fantastic time.

Forest School

10th October 2018

Today we used pieces of rope and big logs that we found in the Forest School area to make our own rope swing. We worked together as a team to find a suitable tree, build the rope swing and think of suitable 'rope swing rules' to help us stay safe. We had an amazing time!

3rd October 2018

What a windy morning in Forest School today! We put on our waterproofs and wellies and headed outside to the Forest School Area. We have been kindly gifted a beautiful, new wooden bird table. So that we can feed the birds that visit our area, today Maple Class made bird feeders using seeds, raisins and lard. When these have set, we will hang them around the area for the birds to enjoy.

26th September 2018

We had a fantastic time at Forest School this morning! We made Woodland Mobiles to decorate the Forest School Area, carefully using scissors and string to attach leaves, sticks and feathers. Then we had our snack whilst sat together in the log circle. We ate oreo biscuits and drank hot chocolate with marshmallows - they were yummy! After that, we had an outdoor phonics sessions, using chalks to write our new sound and words that include the 'oo' sound. We finished off our session with our favourite game; '1, 2, 3...Where are you?'. We were really good at hiding!

19th September 2018

Maple class went out for their first Forest School session of Year 1 this morning. We had a great morning in our wellies and waterproofs. We worked together as a team to find things hidden in the forest school area. Miss Stretton-Clarke hid them really well! Our favourite part was sitting together in our log circle drinking hot chocolate and eating chocolate biscuits! During our free time, we explored the forest school area, built a stage from reels and planks, and acted out the story of the Gruffalo.
